Shooting at the Navy Yard: One Survivor’s Memoir (Second Edition) — Book Trailer
Author: Laurel Myers | Genre: Non-Fiction
Project Overview:
This project focused on creating a powerful and respectful book trailer for Shooting at the Navy Yard: One Survivor’s Memoir (Second Edition) by Laurel Myers. The trailer was designed to visually communicate the gravity of the story while highlighting themes of survival, resilience, and national reflection. The goal was to create a promotional piece that informs, engages, and honors the lived experience at the heart of the memoir.
Creative Direction & Inspiration:
The visual direction draws from patriotic symbolism and somber cinematic tones to reinforce the emotional weight of the narrative. The American flag motif, silhouetted figures, and restrained color palette were intentionally used to convey loss, unity, and strength without sensationalizing the event. The second edition distinction was emphasized to reflect the book’s continued relevance and expanded impact.
Production Process:
As the Video Editor and Motion Designer, I developed the trailer using clean typography, smooth transitions, and controlled pacing to guide the viewer through the story’s emotional arc. Motion elements were kept subtle to allow the message to lead, while timing and visual rhythm were carefully structured to maintain engagement and clarity. The overall edit balances visual storytelling with promotional effectiveness.
Outcome:
The final trailer delivers a compelling and dignified promotional video that supports the memoir’s message and broadens its reach. It serves as a strong example of narrative-driven video production, demonstrating my ability to handle sensitive subject matter with professionalism, empathy, and cinematic precision.
